A few of my close friends were in town (Philadelphia) for the weekend. As they are slightly more tolerant of my hobby of snapping fairly random and candid photos, it was a great opportunity to test out the Nikon D5100.
The Nikon D5100 has dropped in price recently with the release of the Nikon D3200 and an anticipated update, the Nikon D5200 is most likely pending. As such, this DSLR can be had on amazon for about $550 with the standard camera kit lens.

Battery Charger and Battery for Nikon D5100 |
I had a good time with this DSLR. It's a relatively serious amateur DSLR. Nothing near a professional line camera but for the average user there are many functions, probably too many to learn without spending a bit of time with it.
The shutter is snappy, it takes very good low light photos and has a quick continuous mode. For the average person who wishes to take HD video ocacsionally, this is where the camera shines. The swivel display is very handy. Older, lower line models like the Nikon D60 lacked a live view display. This is not the case with the D5100. The battery life was superb. I snapped about 300 photos and about 10 short 1min HD videos and i used up a little over 1/3 of the battery. (Caveat: I did not use the flash very much)
For anyone considering a DSLR that takes HD Video and is already Nikon committed to lenses, I'd recommend it over the 3200. Megapixels aren't everything and for the average person the D5100 is more than adequate and is pretty superb in lowlight situations.
