This past Saturday I went up to Brooklyn to celebrate three of my friends' joint birthdays.  The location chosen for the celebration was Greenwood Park.  None of us had visited the venue so it seemed like an ideal location for birthday festivities and day drinking.

Greenwood Park is a rather spacious beer garden located near Prospect Park/Park Slope (Forgive me but my Brooklyn geography/neighborhood knowledge is quite limited as Philadelphian and former Manhattanite).  It is a bit more off the beaten path and harder to get to than say the Astoria Beer Garden but therein lies its charm.

Fair warning, the clientelle involves young families/parents with children ranging from babies to toddlers to small children.  I have no problems with small children outdoors but some of the other reivews that I looked at before going to Greenwood Park have convinced me that there is a significant portion of the population that has a phobia of the new younger generation.

As you can see in the pictures below, there is a rather large outdoor space with gravel flooring and a spread of tables, larger picnic tables and chairs scattered beneath large umbrellas.  Shade was at a premium and we were significantly happier drinking in the shade as the sun was a bit oppressive.

Three bocce courts are on the far right of the venue but we didn't try to play due to the heat.  There is also seating indoors.  Included are an outdoor and indoor bar with a kitchen inside.  The food is actually quite good and we were pleasantly surprised with our orders.  Sample items include: hamburgers, sausage with peppers, fries, onion rings, steak sandwich, watermelon salad, peppers and numerous other items.

After placing food orders, a placeholder/marker is given to you so that the staff can deliver the order to you from the kitchen.  There was quite a nice selection of draft beers on tap along with sangria and other standard bar options.  The only slight irk is that the establishment is cash only.  This might be something thats common in Brooklyn as I came across many other venues that are cash only but as a pretty prodicious credit card user, it annoyed me slightly.  There is an ATM on site with a surcharge fee (of course).

All in all we were quite surprised with how much we liked the venue and would definitely go back again.
